I understand that sometimes it gets really frustrating when you're debating with someone and they don't seem to see your side ( trust me, I've had my fair share of "ARE YOU SERIOUS?!" moments ), but insulting the other person doesn't help the situation. Once you start doing that, it begins to lose its status of being a debate and starts turning into constant mud slinging, which doesn't help anyone. Not only does it hurt any point you were trying to make with the person you were debating with, it may cause people who are observing it to not think highly of you as well.
When debating, it's best to try to be as respectful as possible ( it's fine to show a little bit of frustration, but it shouldn't be expressed as direct insults or assumptions of someone's character ) and try to see the other person's point of view ( again, I know that can be hard sometimes ).
Once in a while I lose my cool, but I try not to. It doesn't really accomplish anything if I insult the person, nor is it a good habit to get into. To help prevent lashing out, sometimes I get up and think about it to myself for a while ( sometimes I even talk to someone who agrees with and/or understands my opinion to help get out any frustration ) and then come back to it when I feel like I can give a better response. ( Obviously referring to the internet, it doesn't quite work that way in real life.

A good discussion can lead to you strengthening your opinion or even shifting it, depending upon the situation and what was learned from it. I personally think that large, well thought out discussions/debates, that have very little to no name calling or full out bitching, are very healthy.
